The Roots are a Grammy Award-winning American hip-hop band formed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1987 by Tariq "Black Thought" Trotter and Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson. Known for their innovative use of live instrumentation, they blend hip-hop with jazz, soul, funk, and rock. The group has served as the house band for NBC's "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon" since 2014, following their tenure on "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon."
